16-year-old arrested; planned capturing with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass school shooting that would have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department said in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no faculty that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging machine materials and threatening to commit a crime which can result in death or great bodily harm.

Police mentioned they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teenager was a pupil at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police said they found elements to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and electronic objects that might be used to create extra weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"School security stays a excessive priority for the department," police stated in a press release. 

Details on whom the teenager was trying to recruit weren't disclosed. Police mentioned this case stays underneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens advised the school's group that the district was in close contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon parts, the district relied on police experience to evaluate any potential ongoing risk to its colleges. The district communicated with police on the coed's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this era, we alerted our administrative and safety workers about this investigation and, as is our customary follow, maintained close contact with our BPD College Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley High Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation period, we have been assured that this particular person did not pose a right away risk to the Berkeley High School group."
