Talking within the dugout of the Nice American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kapler stated, "I don't plan on coming out for the anthem going ahead until I feel better concerning the path of our country."

Later, Kapler wrote about his disillusionment with what he known as "the shortage of supply of the promise of what our national anthem represents."
"I am not okay with the state of this country. I want I hadn't let my discomfort compromise my integrity. I want that I might have demonstrated what I discovered from my dad, that if you're dissatisfied with your nation, you let it's identified through protest.
