Nashville Public Library launches ‘Freedom to Read’ campaign

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — It is a subject that is taken hold in Tennessee: books like "Maus" or "Stroll Two Moons" have been pulled from cabinets.

While those books may be banned from some colleges, there is nonetheless some other place yow will discover them.

"Our job is just to ensure that if you'd like it, it is right here for you," stated Public Info Officer for the Nashville Public Library, Ed Brown.

"'Maus' is all checked out right now," stated Brown. "So we obtained more copies on order however as quickly as phrase obtained around about what occurred in McMinn County, we bought a whole lot of holds."

These are just some of the two million different materials on the Nashville Public Library.

"A lot of people do not want to learn these books; they don't want their kids to have to read these books, or compelled to read these books, and that is fantastic," said Brown. "But there are a lot people who do, and we wish to be there for the people who do want to read these materials."

And if you want to make your love for these materials identified, what higher method than along with your library card? The 5,000 limited version playing cards for the campaign say "I learn banned books."

"All of us watch the TV exhibits that we like; all of us watch the totally different sports activities or root for the completely different teams we're part of," said Brown. "Books aren't any totally different."

The objective is to get the 5,000 library cards in the fingers of recent sign-ups this month.

"We aren't trying to be a push back — a force pushing back towards these selections — we wish to be a substitute for say, when you might not be capable of get it there... you can get it here," stated Brown.

The restricted version library cards can be found as long as supplies last.
