More than 7,000 flights canceled worldwide over Memorial Day weekend

The Memorial Day vacation weekend is proving a messy one for many airways, with carriers canceling 1000's of flights worldwide, together with a whole bunch in the U.S. on Monday. 

On Monday, 1,634 flights had been canceled as of 11:52 p.m. ET, in response to flight tracking website FlightAware. That followed roughly 1,640 cancellations on Sunday, 1,500 on Saturday and 2,300 on Friday. Greater than 400 of Monday's cancellations involved aircraft scheduled to fly to or from U.S. cities.

Saturday's cancellations have been resulting from unhealthy weather and "air traffic management actions," Atlanta-based Delta said in an e mail to The Related Press, noting it's attempting to cancel flights at least 24 hours prematurely of the Memorial Day weekend. Delta informed CBS News that "round 90%" of its prospects who had a cancelled flight Sunday had been rebooked on a flight "later within the day."

Delta introduced on its website on Thursday that from July 1 to Aug. 7, it might scale back service by about 100 every day departures, primarily in elements of the U.S. and Latin America that Delta steadily serves.
