Israel is set to advance plans for the construction of 4,000 unlawful settler homes in the occupied West Bank, the inside minister has stated.

Inside minister Ayelet Shaked, a staunch supporter of settlements, wrote in a Tweet on Friday that a planning committee would convene subsequent week to approve 4,000 homes, calling construction in the West Bank a “primary, required and obvious factor”.

Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported that the Civil Administration, a army physique, would meet Thursday to advance 1,452 models, and that another 2,536 units could be approved by defence minister Benny Gantz.

US ambassador to Israel Thomas Nides was quoted by local media on Friday as saying the Biden administration has repeatedly made it clear to Israel throughout the previous week that it strongly opposes any further settlement enlargement exercise.

The move comes ahead of a deliberate go to by Biden to Israel, slated for June.

Issa Amro, a Palestinian activist and founder of the Youth Towards Settlements NGO, informed Al Jazeera that the approval of 4,000 new settler homes would imply “more Israeli settler violence towards Palestinians within the West Bank” and more “restrictions and apartheid polices” to be imposed on the Palestinians.

“It's an indicator that Israel is violating international law with impunity and without accountability, and it reveals that the worldwide community is utilizing double requirements with Israel,” Amro said.

He added the move also makes Palestinians feel “extra upset and hopeless” towards the Biden administration.

Israel authorised the construction of 3,000 settler houses in October regardless of one other US rebuke. Authorities have, however, paused some especially controversial initiatives in the wake of robust US opposition.

Israeli settlement expansion within the West Bank and East Jerusalem has continued under each Israeli government since Israel captured the territories within the 1967 Center East conflict.

However, building accelerated in the last few years below former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with a major boom throughout Trump’s US administration, which Palestinians accused of having a robust pro-Israel bias.

Settler attacks in opposition to Palestinians and their property are a regular prevalence in the West Financial institution, dwelling to nearly three million Palestinians.

The Palestinian management desires the West Financial institution as part of a future state and views the unlawful settlements as a serious obstacle to any potential deal.

Earlier this year, Amnesty Worldwide and Human Rights Watch stated Israel is committing the crime of apartheid in opposition to Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territories (OPT).

Since its establishment in 1948, Israel has pursued a coverage of creating and sustaining a “Jewish demographic majority”, Amnesty stated. Israel also exercises full control over land and assets to benefit Jewish Israelis, together with these in illegal settlements.
