The policy, disclosed in leaked emails Musk sent to Tesla's government staff Tuesday, was first reported by electric car news site Electrek.

"Anybody who wishes to do remote work should be in the office for a minimal (and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. That is lower than we ask of manufacturing facility staff," Musk wrote, adding that the office must be the worker's major office the place the other staff they recurrently work together with are based — "not a distant branch office unrelated to the job duties."

Musk stated he would personally evaluation any request for exemption from the coverage, but that for the most part, "When you do not show up, we are going to assume you may have resigned."

Tesla (TSLA) did not reply to a request for comment on the coverage change, however Musk appeared to verify it in a tweet of his personal early Wednesday when asked on Twitter, "Hey Elon...any extra comment to individuals who assume coming into work is an antiquated concept?" Musk replied: "They should pretend to work some place else."The coverage is totally at odds with that of the opposite tech company Musk is trying to purchase, Twitter (TWTR), which has previously introduced workers can continue to do business from home "eternally" if they like. "Wherever you feel best and creative is the place you'll work and that includes working from residence full-time perpetually," CEO Parag Agrawal wrote in a note to Twitter's almost 100,000 staff in March, simply earlier than Musk's curiosity in owning the social media platform was disclosed. At Tesla, however, that won't be the case. It is especially vital that senior managers be seen in the office, Musk mentioned, including that was one of the reasons he essentially lived on the Tesla factory in Fremont, California, when the company was struggling to increase manufacturing in 2017 and 2018.

"If I had not achieved that, Tesla would way back have gone bankrupt," he wrote. "There are of course firms that do not require this, but when was the last time they shipped a terrific new product? It has been some time."

He added, "Tesla has and can create and actually manufacture essentially the most exciting and meaningful merchandise of any firm on Earth," he added. "This is not going to occur by phoning it in."

Surveys present nearly all of office employees choose the choice to do business from home. Since reopening places of work following Covid-19 shutdowns, many corporations past Twitter have announced increased flexibility for workers who need to work remotely, partly as a way to retain or appeal to talent in a very tight labor market. However the world's richest person would not appear concerned about that dynamic.
