The policing minister, Equipment Malthouse, has disputed the suggestion of the chief inspector of constabulary, Andy Cooke, that the price of living crisis will trigger a rise in crime, branding it “old-fashioned” pondering.
As inflation hit a 40-year excessive of 9%, Cooke mentioned on Wednesday that officers should use their “discretion” when deciding whether to prosecute individuals who steal in order to eat.

Malthouse has informed officers to not let shoplifters off if they're stealing food out of desperation throughout the cost of residing crisis.
He later instructed LBC, ministers would guarantee police don't turn a blind eye to shoplifters stealing food.
“In actual fact I wrote to chief constables only a yr or so ago saying they should not be ignoring these seemingly small crimes,” he mentioned.
Earlier, the minister told Instances Radio: “The broad rule is that justice needs to be blind and I hope and consider that is the principle that sits behind not simply the police but the operation of the courts as properly.
