SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California is entering the subsequent budget 12 months with a record-smashing surplus of almost $100 billion, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday.

Newsom unveiled a revised budget plan of just over $300 billion for the next fiscal 12 months, the very best in state history and fueled by surging tax revenues. The state has collected $55 billion extra in taxes than officials expected in January, leaving it with an estimated $97.5 billion surplus.

Which means Newsom, a Democrat, has tens of billions of dollars extra to spend on new and current initiatives as he seeks re-election in the fall. He plans additional spending to sort out the ongoing drought, to help more women get abortions in California and to offset rising costs of meals, gasoline and different items as a result of inflation.

He’ll have to achieve agreement with the Democratic-led legislature on all of his proposals. They've till the tip of June to finalize the funds, which takes impact July 1.

Newsom stated one of his top price range priorities is providing Californians relief from inflation.

“Individuals are feeling deep stress, deep anxiety,” he said.

He’s proposed giving $400 checks to registered automotive house owners in the state, with up to two checks per individual. That will value the state about $11.5 billion, he stated. Though the money would only go to car homeowners, Newsom mentioned it should be considered “inflation refund and reduction.”

“For you, it could possibly be a rebate to handle the problem of groceries, it may very well be a rebate to deal with the opposite cost burdens which might be placed on you,” he said.

Democratic lawmakers, though, have a unique concept on tips on how to present reduction. They need to give $200 checks solely to those below a certain income level.

Republicans, in the meantime, say rather than a verify Newsom should droop the state’s highest-in-the nation fuel tax for one year. They’ve also requested him to increase a tax credit score for renters and offer new tax credits to college students.

“Senate Republicans imagine there's a higher strategy to put money into the state,” mentioned Sen. Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh of Yucaipa.
