16-year-old arrested; planned taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass faculty taking pictures that would have included a bombing at Berkeley High Faculty, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division stated in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no faculty that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging machine supplies and threatening to commit against the law which can end in dying or great bodily injury.

Police stated they acquired a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teenager was a pupil at Berkeley Excessive Faculty.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they discovered elements to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital items that could possibly be used to create additional weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"School safety remains a excessive priority for the division," police said in a press release. 

Details on whom the teenager was making an attempt to recruit were not disclosed. Police mentioned this case remains below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the school's group that the district was in close contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon parts, the district relied on police expertise to assess any potential ongoing risk to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and security staff about this investigation and, as is our customary observe, maintained shut contact with our BPD College Resource Officer on the Berkeley High School campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation interval, we have been assured that this individual did not pose an instantaneous menace to the Berkeley High College group."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary action in opposition to the student.
